An open letter to Sony

Dear Sony,

We appreciate and understand that you, being a multinational corporation which churns out a slew of products so vast that it would be pointless to assume that the PSP should be your sole focus... i.e. we get that, not an issue.

We also get that in you've invested considerably in your latest fumbling release of the PS3, which of course we here at psponmac will purchase and it will look great alongside our xbox 360s... when the damn thing comes out in Europe 3+ months from now....

We respect that you integrated our favorite little handheld entertainment center into your newly launched PS3. *thumbs up* (which, of course, though the staff here has blue passports we still haven't seen because.. well... you relieved yourself on Europe, again. Sorry we are rather bitter about this.)

*clears throat*

What we don't get is why you didn't listen to us a long time ago when we suggested that you hire the devhook proverbial rock-in-your-big-ass-shoes. Quite frankly, it's beginning to irritate us that you continue to release updates that takes devhook mere hours to "open source" if you will.

We decided to simply write you this letter to try and help YOU out. We own 'nary a share and Howard Stringer has yet to email, call, fax, send smoke signals or otherwise acknowledge our existence (which we find strange because out life-sized Steve Jobs poster -- which is placed as the centerpiece of our iShrine-- speaks to us all the time). Our simple suggestion is that you accept your L and begin to welcome the quite small community of people, geeks and well trained dolphins who have been able to create a community/market/think tank around the PSP. In other words please quit trying to fight a losing battle and you just might learn something.

Feel free to contact us and offer us consultation money and/or a few HDTVs and I hope the sprawlingness of this passionate plea doesn't confuse you.

Sincerely,

HDTV and PS3-less P.O.M. (POM doesn't sound very good but you get the point, right?)

Firmware 3.00 Released & Manual Online...

Update:
Firmware 3.0 can now be downloaded via Network Update, or directly below.

Download: System Update 3.00

So finally theres an update with something other than security fix. Some might even be just a little tempted to update. Just keep in mind once you update there is no turning back to 1.5 as of yet.

QJ says:

"Remote Play - Remote play is a new feature in Firmware 3.00 that allows you to remotely control your PlayStation 3 from your PSP. This also includes the display of PS3 content on the PSP. “You can display a PLAYSTATION®3 system screen on a PSP™ system and play content that is on the PS3™ system. To use this feature, you must adjust the necessary settings on the PSP™ system and the PS3™ system.” Using this new mode of playback, one can control the Photo, Music, Video, and internet browser features of the PlayStation 3 from a remote location via their Playstation Portable.

Video Compatibility - In this updated version of the Playstation Portable firmware, you are also able to play a few new video formats. The Motion JPEG format (M-JPEG), is an “informal name for multimedia formats where each video frame or interlaced field of a digital video sequence is separately compressed as a JPEG image” (Wikipedia). The PlayStation Portable plays both the Linear PCM and the μ-Law versions of the Motion JPEG video format. In addition, you will now be able to access the Camera (functionality) from the photo option menus, for quicker easier access when taking photos or video. Another nifty function is the ability to finally turn off Auto Play for inserted UMD Discs via UMD Auto Boot. (Thanks zerojay)

PlayStation Games - Here’s the big tip you’ve been waiting for. Finally, Sony is going to drop their highly anticipated PlayStation One emulator onto the PSP. From the manual however, there seems to be a unavoidable catch. If you don’t have a PS3, your not going to be enjoying PlayStation One games emulating on Sony’s PlayStation One emulator for PSP anytime soon. From the manual it states that you must connect to the Playstation Online store with your PSP connected to the PlayStation 3 in order to download and play the games. In addition, they mention that you can in fact share the games, but you must activate the other system in the Friends menu as a PS3 Network Account".

MyTunesRSS 2.3.5

MyTunesRSS is 100% pure Java, i.e. it runs on any system with Java 1.5 and up. You start MyTunesRSS which includes an embedded Tomcat server. On this server you can access a web application with any browser which lets you search your iTunes library by title and/or artists. Then you can create an RSS feed or an M3U playlist from the results.

Any device capable of receiving RSS feeds or M3U playlists can get the songs from your iTunes library through the feed. For example the Playstation Portable can play songs from your iTunes library over WLAN with this application.

CWCheat for Mac OS X *Update*

Read me:
"Simply put, CWCheat for Mac OS X is a database editor for the popular 'Cheat Device' for PSP, known as CWCheat created by weltall. It allows you to easily and effectively modify and manage your cheat database. With a rapidly growing cheat database, it's very easy to get lost in it, especially when trying to find what you are looking for with a regular text editor. This is where this database front end comes in handy. You can add, remove, or modify your cheats, all at the press of a button".

CWCheat for Mac OS X v0.4:

  • CWCheat for Mac OS X is now a Universal Binary!
  • Removed the 'Tools' tab in favour of a Preferences window, accessable through the File menu.
  • Added a 'Submit Cheat' tab. This will allow you to submit your found cheats directly to the CWCheat main server
  • Bug fixes here and there

PSP manager for Mac OS X

The new PSPKit is a basic PSP "manager" for Mac which will help you with various things-- from managing your PSP files on your computer to much more complicated things such as making the DevHook installation a little bit easier. We say that you should at least try it out and let us know if you likes.

Read Me:
-Under Preferences
PSP Memory Stick -> This is used to tell PSPkit where your memory stick is. You can choose this by clicking the Browse button. Your PSP must be connected and in USB mode before PSPkit will find your PSP. PSPkit will remember this name. As long as you do not change the name of your PSP on the computer, you will not have to change this again. The name of your PSP memory stick will show up in every window of PSPkit.

Hide Corrupt Icons -> This will rename your homebrew games, and device hook installs so that the corrupt data icons do not show up on your PSP under firmware version 1.5, or custom firmware.

-Main Window
-DH Installer -> This tab will install any version of Device Hook version .46 or lower. It will not install version .47. In order to install properly, you must select the main devhook folder (EG- /desktop/devhook). It will only install the English version right now.

-Backup And Restore -> This handy little tool will allow you to back up, and restore your memory stick contents, should anything happen to your PSP data. Click "Backup" to copy everything from your PSP, and "Restore" to restore all of your backed up data back to the PSP. "Show current backup" will display a list of your current files that are backed up on your computer.

-Homebrew Transfer -> This can be used to organize your homebrew, and rename them to hide corrupt icons if necessary. "Add New Game" will allow you to choose a new game to add to your PSP. Please select the folder WITHOUT the "%" in its name in order to be sure everything is copied correctly. If "Hide Corrupted Icons" is selected in preferences, PSPkit will rename all of the homebrew to hide the corrupt icons. View Current Games will show a list of games that you have currently on your computer to be transfered. Transfer Games will copy all of the games you have selected on your computer to your PSP's "GAME" folder.

System Requirements:
Mac OS X 10.3.x or later.

in memory of...

*edit*

Yesterday I broke the horrible news to the owner of said PSP, he took it quite well (much better than I would have). I was about to give it back to him when I showed my coworker, who knows nothing about PSPs, he popped the disk out and turned the wireless switch off and the damn thing came on! Not only did it come on it was downgraded already to 1.50. I popped on DevHook and it worked! sorry for the over excitement but it took a hell of a weight off of my shoulders (being that the owner is the guy who hired me). Though it still eats at me that my coworker was able to do something that I wasn't... oh well.

Friday's grand release of the xtrusion's 2.71 downgrader was watched closely by us here at PSPonMac 'specially since we have a 2.6 firmware PSP collecting dust because the GTA this person bought wasn't the original, We even tried to downgrade it on a pc.... long stories brushed aside, we knew that in our overt professionalism that this would be the moment we proudly return the psp to it's rightful owner with homebrew enable minus the need to find another copy of GTA. The downgrader dropped and after reviewing the comments made about the how amazingly easy it was to complete the downgrade we put our proverbial foot in cold water and tried. completed the process and restarted it... green light... blank screen... it bricked...

this was our first case, after overwhelming successes with hordes of psps, of losing *sniff* one. we would now take this moment to say R.I.P. to FW 2.6 PSP... now to explain this to the owner...

2.71 Downgrader Released!

From www.psp-hacks.com

Renowned PSP developer Dark_AleX, along side with Mathieulh & Yoshi, have managed to successfully downgrade a non-TA-082 PSP running FW 2.71 - thanks to the recently discovered TIFF exploit! The process entails several steps [and precautions] which closely resemble the same procedure taken to downgrade 2.50/2.60. With that in mind, it’s probably safe to assume someone will take the liberty in creating an “Easy 2.71 -> 1.50 Downgrader.”

  1. Copy the files inside MS_ROOT to the root of your memory stick.
  2. Wait someone with 1.50 to pass you a folder called DOWNDATER and copy it to the root of your memstick.
  3. It is recomended that you have the psp at more than 50% batteery and connected to AC
  4. Go to the xmb photo viewer.

At this point will one of the following things:

    • You’ll see a full red screen. This indicates that the downdater is doing its job. Wait for it to finish. When it finish it will crash on purpose. Restart your psp manually and you’ll probably have a 1.50 if nothing went wrong.
    • You don’t see the red screen. This indicates that the downdater code has not started to execute. (even if the memstick blinks(or no), it doesn’t matter! if the screen is not red, you can safely restart the psp at this point).

This happen because of inestability in the tiff.
Don’t worry, just restart the psp and keep trying until you reach the red screen of downdate.
The downdater code is NEVER executed partially. It’s either executed totally or nothing.

It depends of “luck” but usually the downdater will start to execute in a average of 1/10 times.
Things that may increase the probabilities:

    - A fresh formatted memory stick.
    - A 32 MB memory stick (and fresh formatted)

REMEMBER: THIS DOES NOT WORK WITH TA-082 MOTHERBOARDS!

Much respect for NOPx86 for discovering the libtiff exploit; Fanjita, Skylark, and everyone else involved with this phenomenal breakthrough!

Download: 2.71 Downgrader (includes all necessary files)

As always… with any flash-related tool, USE AT YOUR OWN RISK - good luck!

FFMPEGX issues for Intel Mac

My three week old MacBook and FFMPEGX (which gets religious usage) haven't been playing together well lately. Either it says that it encoded .avi files in one second flat (with zero kb showing) or the quality takes a deep dive (both video and sound).
We were wondering if anyone else had experienced this issue as well.

* Fixed problems that made 1.50 NoUMD not functioning.
* Added more exclusive controls added to flash emulation. As well as other memory stick breaking countermeasures.
* Memory map changed for rebooting

To-Do

* FW2.71 registry initialization failure problem.
* Stabilize flash emulation (file access).

PMP on MAC

For those without the Intel based Macs who want to stream PMP movies, here's what you will need to get your movies in PMP format .

- FFMPEGX
- pmp_muxer_1_0_2_source folder
- PMP Mod v1.02 (works only on FW 1.0 und 1.5)

Here's a great tutorial on how to create PMP on your oh-so-lovely MAC OSX..follow the instructions until you get to the part where you need to use your Terminal window then:

Take the files out of the pmp_muxer and have them on desktop (make sure you have your Video.avi and your Audio.mp3 also on your desktop)

The thing that Mastamind failed to mention for us not-so-tech-inclined (i.e. non-nerdy people) is we need to type "cd Desktop" in the terminal (copy and paste, it's case sensitive) then hit Enter. Now u can copy "perl pmp_muxer.pl Video.avi Audio.mp3 weltraum.pmp" then hit Enter again. It will take a few seconds until it says "status OK" at this point there should be a file on your desktop called "weltraum.pmp and thats it!

This is what you'll need for streaming:

- pmp_mod1.02-M4g3_bin

- Python

1. Edit the pmp.ini file in your PMPMOD_M4g3 folder then save.

2. Copy both folder in your PSP/GAME(PMPMOD_M4g3 and PMPMOD_M4g3%)

3. Start your server using Python Launcher

4. Look for "ROOT=" this is where you should type the location of your pmp ex. ROOT=/Users/psponmac/Desktop

5. Now start up your PMPMOD on your PSP and your done!

Let me know if this helps or you need some further instruction feel free to ask.

Good luck

Linky :-D - July 4th edition

Jeff Nolan over at Venture Chronicles linked us in his very compelling post about Sony's suicidal tendencies. We agree fully with his stance on Sony's missteps in regards to the PSP and their inability to conceive the concept of flexibility. He puts it much more eloquently, of course, but we appreciate the linkage Jeff, hopefully someone will listen.

In other news we're compiling a 'Wish List' of programs we feel should be moved over to the Mac platform and additions to already existing Mac programs. If you have any ideas please email us and give us your input.

Enjoy the Holiday and folks remember: Firearms are NOT Fireworks!

Thanks :-D

Patience

We here at psponmac have patience, so much so that we've achieved perfection multiple times only to demote ourselves simply to extend the virtue of our patience. With that being said we, of course, patiently waited with a 1.5 firmwire while others spoke of web browsers, RSS and LocationFree.... One could say that people who upgraded shouldn't be allowed in our utopia, but since we hold 'nary a grudge (being perfect and all) we welcome you to our utopia.

You simply need a 2.5 or 2.6 firmwire and the GTA UMD and your in. Oh! We have but one rule here: Please don't feed the pink unicorns after 8pm.

Thank you.

Must Haves for 1.5 users:

1. devhook041d: 2,5 emulator (if u need help with this just let us know we can de-nerdify it for you)

2. Links2 r1195: this is a stand alone browser (the hands down best browser 4 your PSP if your spinelessness won't allow you to give DevHook a try.)

3. AFKIM v2: an instant messenger for almost all the major IM protocols (including AIM, ICQ, MSN, Google Talk and Yahoo! still one of my favorite give it a try..)

4. Amaryllis: PSP ad-hoc network for games that lack infrastructure gaming (basically your be playing all your ad-hoc games online with your friends and its FREE!!!!)

5. PSPRadio: Online Radio on your PSP, for the radio types (it lets you to stream music and listen to Shoutcast servers, like WIFI Radio, from the your PSP.)

6. PMP VLC: VLC player for your PSP (It will also let you stream video from your mac using VLC-8.5. It works, but not that perfectly yet but we'll keep you up to date with the future versions)

7. Coverbuddy: Control itunes with your PSP browser (this will ensure that you don't have to move more than 3 inches at a time because like you we too are lazy ass bastards :-D

If you need a little help feel free to leave a comment or email us a psponmac AT gmail dot com.

A reminder: To ensure that everyone gets the most out of this blog we would like to remind you that the more we work together the more we'll all get out of this experience so please remember to email us at psponmac AT gmail dot com. Please include the name you would like to be thanked on and we're all peachy :-D We also plan to have a wish list which will allow us to keep a running tab on non mac programs, and additions to already existing programs, which we effin' wish we could have or improve. If you have ideas please feel free to email us and let us know.

Thanks in advance.
